Built for Surveillance, Not General Storage

Standard desktop hard drives are designed for burst activity, not the continuous read/write demands of a CCTV system. This 6TB surveillance-rated hard drive is engineered specifically for the job, running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, writing multiple simultaneous video streams without skipping frames or burning out prematurely.

What makes a surveillance drive different?

The workload profile of a CCTV recorder is unlike almost any other storage task. Data is written constantly and in parallel, often from 4, 8, or 16 cameras at once, with only occasional reads when footage is reviewed. Surveillance drives are optimised for exactly this pattern, with firmware tuned for high write endurance and rotational vibration compensation to cope with being mounted alongside other drives in a recorder stack.

They also run cooler and quieter than desktop equivalents, which matters when your recorder is sitting in a cabinet or office environment around the clock.

How long will 6TB last?

6TB is the natural step up for systems with more cameras, higher resolutions, or a requirement to hold footage for longer. As a rough guide, you can expect around 21 to 42 days of continuous footage from a 4-camera system, depending on resolution, frame rate, and whether motion-triggered recording is used. On an 8-camera system at 1080p with motion detection, you would typically see 15 to 24 days of retention. Move up to 4K cameras or continuous recording and that figure comes down, which is exactly why the extra capacity is worth having. If you are running a 16-camera system, or you need to be certain footage is still there a fortnight after an incident, this is the sensible minimum.

Compatibility

Compatible with the vast majority of current NVRs and DVRs. Always check your recorder's manual to confirm the maximum supported drive size before purchasing, as some older or entry-level models cap out below 6TB. This drive fits the standard 3.5-inch drive bay found in most standalone recorders.

Worth fitting properly

A surveillance drive should be seated firmly in the recorder's drive bay with all mounting screws fitted. Vibration from a loosely fitted drive shortens its lifespan significantly. If you are not confident fitting a drive yourself, it is a straightforward job for any competent installer.
