About the HL-S3E-R8

The HL-S3E-R8 is a battery powered smoke alarm with wireless interlink, designed to be installed in groups so that a fire detected anywhere in a property sounds every alarm in the property at once. That is the whole point of it, and it is worth being clear about why it matters. A conventional standalone alarm in a kitchen will do its job perfectly well, but if the household is asleep upstairs behind closed doors, nobody hears it in time. Interlinked alarms remove that gap. Smoke in the hallway means the alarm beside the bed sounds too.

The interlink is wireless on the 868 MHz band, so there is no cabling to run between units and no need to disturb ceilings or lift floors. Hikvision quote a radio range of up to 1,000 m between alarms in open space, which in practice means the constraint on a domestic or small commercial install is the building fabric rather than the radio, and a typical house or flat is comfortably covered. That makes this a sensible retrofit option for properties where hard wiring a Grade D system is either impractical or out of budget.

Worth being clear that every unit is a complete smoke alarm in its own right. Each has its own sensor, sounder and battery, so a single HL-S3E-R8 fitted on its own works perfectly well as a standalone alarm. The wireless interconnection is capability layered on top, not a requirement, so you can start with one and add more later without changing anything.

Each unit gives an audible and visual alarm at 85 dB or better measured at 3 m, A-weighted, which is the standard benchmark for a domestic alarm and loud enough to wake a sleeping adult in the same room. A hush function lets somebody silence a nuisance activation at the unit rather than resorting to pulling the battery out, which is the single most common reason alarms end up non-functional in real homes. Anything that keeps the battery in the alarm is worth having. The alarm can also be muted using an infrared remote control, which is a practical touch for high ceilings. If the smoke that caused the activation is still present, the alarm reactivates after twelve minutes rather than staying silent, so a hush cannot accidentally disable the alarm during a real fire.

Power comes from a replaceable 3 V DC CR123A lithium cell of 1600 mAh capacity, rated for eight years of normal operation. Standby draw is 12 microamps or less, rising to no more than 50 mA in alarm. The alarm monitors its own condition and flags problems rather than failing silently: there is a low voltage warning as the battery nears the end of its life, a dirty chamber warning when dust or contamination builds up in the sensing labyrinth and could otherwise cause false alarms, and a battery uninstalled indicator so a unit that has been left without a cell does not sit there looking fine. A test button lets you confirm the unit is working whenever you want to check it.

Physically it is a compact ceiling mounted disc at 105 mm diameter and 35 mm deep, weighing 103.7 g with the battery in. It is rated for -10 °C to 55 °C and up to 95% relative humidity, so a hallway, landing, bedroom or living room presents no difficulty. The alarm is built to EN 14604:2005, the European standard for smoke alarm devices, and also carries AS 3786:2023 for the Australian market.

Fitting is a job you can do yourself in an afternoon. Each alarm screws to the ceiling or sticks on with the supplied adhesive pad, and pairing them together is done at the unit rather than through any app or panel. There is no wiring, no electrician and no ongoing cost. For a homeowner, a landlord or a small business, it is the difference between an alarm that protects one room and a system that protects the whole building.

Suffix explained

Within this range, the R suffix denotes wireless interconnection capability and the trailing 8 denotes the 868 MHz radio band. The HL-S3E-R8 is therefore the 868 MHz interlinking variant, which is the correct band for use in the UK and Europe. Units must share the same radio band to interlink with one another, so keep a property on a single variant.

Installation guidance

  • Ceiling mounted, with the edge of the detector at least 500 mm from any wall
  • Fit multiple detectors where the ceiling run exceeds 10 m
  • Keep at least 300 mm clear of heavy electrical cable runs
  • Fix with the supplied screws and anchors, or with the supplied adhesive pad on smooth surfaces such as glass, metal, timber or sound latex paint
  • Adhesive fixing needs 21 °C to 38 °C to bond properly and reaches full strength after 72 hours, so use screws below 10 °C or on rough surfaces
  • Do not fit in kitchens, bathrooms or other damp areas, near air supply ducts or extract fans, above cookers, in dusty or insect prone spaces, within 1.5 m of fluorescent lighting, or in dead air spaces such as ceiling apexes and room corners
  • Do not install in new or recently renovated buildings until all work is finished, as construction dust contaminates the smoke chamber
