PoE stands for Power over Ethernet - it means a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable carries both the video signal and power to the camera. There is no need for a separate power supply at each camera location, which makes installation significantly cleaner and simpler, particularly when running cables through walls or across long distances.
Every IP camera we sell is PoE compatible. Connect them directly to a PoE NVR or a PoE network switch and they power up automatically. Unlike Wi-Fi cameras that can suffer from signal interference or dropouts, a hardwired PoE connection ensures a constant, high-bandwidth stream for 24/7 recording. Resolution options range from 2MP Full HD through to 8MP 4K Ultra HD.
Not sure whether PoE or HD over Coax is right for your situation? Our CCTV buyers guide walks through both formats and helps you decide based on your property and existing cabling.
For smaller systems up to 8 cameras, a PoE NVR with built-in ports is the simplest solution - one box handles recording and powers all cameras. For larger installations, a standalone PoE switch gives you more flexibility and allows you to easily expand your system by adding more ports. You will also need a suitable CCTV hard drive - our buyers guide covers storage calculations.
Long Distance PoE mode is supported on compatible Hikvision NVRs and switches, extending the cable run up to 250 metres at reduced speed - useful for outbuildings and large sites. Browse IP CCTV systems for matched camera and recorder kits.
