Modern analogue CCTV cameras use HD-TVI technology, which delivers high definition video - up to 8MP 4K - over standard RG59 coax cable. If you have an existing analogue system, you can upgrade your cameras and recorder without touching a single cable. It is a cost-effective way to get a significant jump in image quality.
Gone are the days of grainy, low-resolution analogue footage. HD-TVI cameras from Hikvision and HiLook now achieve resolutions up to 8MP over standard BNC connections, making them the ideal choice for anyone wanting to upgrade image quality while keeping their existing cable infrastructure. Most models are "4-in-1" selectable cameras, meaning they are compatible with almost any DVR on the market.
The main trade-off versus IP is cable run distance - coax has a maximum recommended run of around 300 metres at 2MP, dropping to 200 metres at higher resolutions. For most domestic and small commercial installations this is more than sufficient. See our CCTV buyers guide for a full comparison of both formats.
To build a complete HD over Coax system you will need a DVR (Digital Video Recorder), RG59 coax cable, and power supplies for the cameras.
