About the KHLIP412-8MP
This is a 4 camera 8MP IP CCTV kit with four Kestrel motorised zoom turret cameras, a HiLook 4 channel recorder and a 4 port PoE switch. The recorder records all four cameras continuously, 24 hours a day, in full 8MP (4K) resolution.
The motorised zoom is what makes these cameras useful. The 3.6-11mm lens gives you an 85° view at the wide end, enough to cover a garden or the front of a house. Zoom in to 43° and you can bring a gate or the far end of a driveway closer for more detail. You can adjust the zoom from the recorder or the HiLook app, so once a camera is up you can fine tune its view without getting the ladder out again.
At night, infrared reaches up to 30m. The turrets are rated IP66 for outdoor use, and each one is powered over a single network cable from the included PoE switch.
Footage records to a hard drive fitted inside the HiLook recorder (drive sold separately). You can watch live or play back on a TV or monitor through HDMI or VGA, and on your phone with the HiLook app. Kestrel's own app service has now closed, which is why I've paired these cameras with HiLook recorders.
This is clearance stock, and I won't be able to get any more Kestrel cameras once it's gone. This kit uses all four channels on the recorder, so if you think you might want more cameras later, take a look at the 8 or 10 camera kits instead.
Please read before ordering
I've tested this combination on the bench and it works well, but it isn't the same as one of our standard HiLook kits. Here's what it doesn't do:
- No motion detection. It records 24/7 only. There are no motion alerts or push notifications to your phone.
- No smart features. There's no person or vehicle detection.
- Not plug and play. Each camera needs a one-off setup before the recorder can see it, and you'll need a Windows PC to do it. See "How setup works" below.
If you want your phone to alert you when someone walks up the drive, one of our HiLook IP kits will suit you better. If you want an 8MP zoom system that records everything around the clock and you don't mind spending an hour on setup, this kit is very good value.
How setup works
Kestrel cameras aren't HiLook, so the recorder won't find them on its own. If you plug them straight into the recorder's PoE ports, nothing happens. Instead, the cameras plug into the included PoE switch. Then you plug the switch into your router, and plug the recorder's network port into the switch's second uplink port or straight into your router.
- Install Kestrel's free Device Manager on a Windows PC connected to the same network.
- Use it to give each camera an IP address that matches your router's network, with the gateway set to your router's address.
- On the recorder, edit a channel for each camera, enter the IP address you gave it and add it using ONVIF.
Each camera only needs doing once. I've written a step-by-step guide and recorded two short videos that walk you through it, and most people have every camera up and running in under an hour.
Choosing a hard drive
Because every camera records all the time, the drive fills at a steady rate. Once it's full, the recorder writes over the oldest footage. Four 8MP cameras use a fair amount of space, so I'd suggest at least a 4TB drive for this kit. If you'd like to keep footage for longer, go bigger. If you're not sure which size to choose, get in touch and I'll help you pick one.
